AI ready product data: an 8 point checklist

Eight checks for product data that AI channels can read, verify and use when they recommend products from your catalog.

Clean product data gives AI channels facts they can read, proof they can trust and a brand they can describe.

Buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini which product fits their needs. Those systems do not start with your campaign. They start with the data they can read, compare and verify.

Shopify groups AI ready product data into three layers: facts, social proof and brand identity. The checklist below turns those layers into eight concrete checks for your catalog.

Facts: Can AI Read The Product?

1. Put Every Important Fact In A Structured Field

Warnings, materials, dimensions, key features and use cases belong in fields with clear labels. Do not hide them in an image or a long paragraph. “Material: 100% organic cotton” is useful data. A passing mention inside campaign copy is not.

This is where Shopify Taxonomy and metafields matter. They give each value a defined place, so the same product record works for the storefront, Shop, Google Merchant and AI shoppers.

2. Write Variants In Full

A missing option does not exist to an AI agent. Keep sizes, colours and specifications complete and current. Write “Black”, “One Size” and “Long Sleeve”, not internal abbreviations such as “BLK”, “OS” and “LS”.

3. Keep Every Surface Consistent

Price, stock, descriptions and specifications must agree across your product page, marketplaces and third party listings. Conflicting values force an AI system to choose which source to trust. Often, it will choose another product instead.

4. Publish Store Policies As Data

Shipping, delivery and returns answer real buying questions. Publish the timeframe, conditions and process in plain text. Link those policies from product pages. A single vague line in the footer is not enough.

Proof: Can AI Trust The Answer?

5. Treat Reviews As Distribution Infrastructure

Verified reviews add independent evidence. Volume matters, but recency and consistency matter too. Keep real reviews arriving on product pages and recognised third party sites. An old burst of reviews is weaker than a steady current of recent experiences.

6. Build Signals Outside Your Own Store

AI channels also read what others say about your brand. Press coverage, expert roundups, podcasts and real community discussions add context that your own product page cannot provide.

Identity: Can AI Describe Your Brand?

7. Make The About Page Specific

State who founded the brand, why it exists, who it serves and what it stands for. Specific facts travel. “Founded in 2018 by a marathoner who could not find shoes for flat, wide feet” gives an agent something it can use. “Passionate about quality” does not.

8. Codify Your Brand Vocabulary

Record the words that describe the product experience, mood and point of view. Put relevant descriptors beside product attributes, not only in a brand deck. This helps an AI match a product to a question such as “soft sleepwear that feels lived in”.

The Migration Is The Moment To Fix It

Most legacy catalogs have the right facts in the wrong places. A material sits in a description. A fit sits in a tag. A policy lives inside an image. Moving to Shopify gives you one moment when every record is already being mapped.

Syncer uses that moment to map products into Shopify Taxonomy, preserve the original records and validate every field. Clean data then flows through Syncer Channels and Syncer Markets without rebuilding the catalog for each destination.

AI visibility starts with a product record that can be read without guessing.

Run The Eight Checks

  1. Important facts have labelled fields.
  2. Variants are complete and written in full.
  3. Prices and specifications match across channels.
  4. Shipping and returns are explicit and readable.
  5. Verified reviews are recent and consistent.
  6. Independent sources mention the brand.
  7. The About page contains specific facts.
  8. Brand vocabulary exists beside product attributes.

If several checks fail, start with the source data. The migration scan shows what is present, what is missing and what needs a defined target before the move to Shopify.
