On the future of e-commerce, developers and unexpected business ideas

The world of e-commerce is changing at high speed. What fifteen years ago felt like a boundless playing field for online innovation is being redefined again today — by the rise of AI. Inside our own agency — with an average age in the mid-30s (oh dear, that suddenly feels grown-up!) — we notice we're no longer the young guns. But what we may lose in youth, we make up for with experience, a healthy dose of curiosity and a sharp eye for what's coming our way.

Webwinkel Vakdagen: clashing worlds

A telling example? The Webwinkel Vakdagen we attended this week. A trade fair where the future is supposed to be tangible — at least, that's the idea. But where in reality old ways of thinking are still doing the rounds. On one side we saw innovative tools, AI-driven features and platforms like Shopify rapidly redefining the market. On the other side were the traditional companies and agencies — still pushing 'custom' stores whose costs can easily hit a hundred thousand euros.

Or even more???

Honestly, there were whispers of trajectories of nearly a million euros for a single store. A store! Surely that's not of this time anymore?

We believe it can — and should — be done differently. Not by compromising on quality or design, but by working smarter. By using tools like Syncer, which make migrating to a platform like Shopify razor-fast and painless. By going for scalable themes built specifically for the European market. And by staying open to innovation.

The AI wind that's blowing

AI is no longer a hype. It's here, and it's in full motion. Where developers used to be assured of a steady stream of work, that's no longer a given. Stores are increasingly generated automatically, product descriptions roll out of AI systems and even product photos are effortlessly produced by an algorithm. Drones deliver parcels, customer service runs on AI chatbots and even onboarding processes for new store owners can be automated.

In short: the basics are getting faster and more efficient. And that's great — as long as we as humans keep focusing on what genuinely sets us apart.

The power of the unexpected

Last night we 'celebrated' the birthday of our dog Rinus. Something we wouldn't have planned earlier, let alone documented. And yet there was an unexpected beauty in it. Crafting an AI-composed birthday song for our four-legged friend led to fresh inspiration. Not because it was necessarily useful, but because it felt creative. Genuine. Authentic. And even with AI. Those moments — however small — can spark new business models, fresh ideas and concepts you'd never otherwise have considered.

Smarter collaboration for scalable success

What we're seeing more and more is the traditional all-rounder agency making way for an ecosystem of collaborating specialists. And it works. When the data migration — from Magento to Shopify, Lightspeed to Shopify or soon WooCommerce to Shopify — runs entirely through Syncer, calm enters the process. Agencies can focus on what they're great at: translating client needs into design, brand experience and customisation. Customers benefit from a scalable approach, lower costs and the preservation of the relationship with their trusted agency.

The technical side — product data, customer details, orders and even content — is migrated flawlessly and safely. Soon even in an optimised version of Syncer, lowering the threshold even further to move to a future-proof platform like Shopify.

And let's be honest: why pour tens of thousands of euros into a custom CMS with limited future-proofing when, for a fraction of that, you can choose a scalable, fast, conversion-driving and continually improving solution?

The future calls for vision and guts

We're on the cusp of a shift. Not only technologically, but also philosophically. How do we want our digital world to look when AI handles the 'what' and we have to fill in the 'why'?

That calls for a change in mindset. Agencies that are open-minded, that don't get stuck in old systems or revenue models. But also customers who dare to ask: "What else is possible?"

The real value of an agency no longer lies just in building a store. Soon you'll be able to generate one with a few prompts. The value lies in understanding context, in strategy, in brand experience — in humanity.

So… where is the human?

Right here. In the middle of all this. Not lagging behind, but leading the way with tools like Syncer, with scalable solutions like Shopify, with data that migrates smoothly and with teams that work together for the customer's benefit.

The future isn't either human or machine. It's human with machine. And as long as we keep investing in creativity, connection and innovation, we won't just stay relevant — we'll stay inspiring.
