In this blog Connie, our front-end developer, takes you into the world of Shopify Metafields.
If you've just switched from Lightspeed to Shopify and you're working with the Syncer Framework, you might notice that some things work a little differently than you're used to. Where Lightspeed gave you limited fields like 'data01, data02, data03' to store extra product information, Shopify offers a much more powerful and flexible solution: Metafields. Think of metafields as an extended and versatile version of those old fields. Where in Lightspeed you were stuck with a limited set of data fields, in Shopify you can create unlimited metafields and link them to different parts of your store. That makes your shop more dynamic and efficient, without needing apps or complicated code.
What are Metafields?
Metafields are extra fields you can add to products, collections, pages, customers, orders, blogs, variants and more. They give you the ability to store structured data and display it in a smart way in your store. That way you have to make fewer manual changes and you can manage your content dynamically.
What can you use them for?
Storing extra product information, such as material or care instructions.
Adding dynamic banners and custom copy to collection pages.
Showing customer-specific content based on collected data.
The best part? You can manage them directly in Shopify and link them with a few simple clicks! On top of that, you can use the content from metafields in any section of the Syncer Framework, so you're no longer dependent on what you put in the product description.
How do you set up Metafields?
Setting up metafields is super easy and can be done directly in the Shopify admin. Below is a step-by-step explanation on how to add a metafield to your products:
In Shopify, go to Settings > Custom data and choose Products.
Click Add metafield and give it a logical name, e.g. 'Material' or 'Care instructions'.
Pick the right type (e.g. 'Text' for text fields or 'Image' for media).
Go to a product page and fill in the new metafield fields.
Open your theme settings, click on the text field where you want to display the information and use the 'Connect dynamic resource' button to link the metafield.
From now on the information is shown automatically, without having to edit each description by hand!
5 useful applications of Metafields
Extra product information Add unique attributes to your products, such as ingredients for food or material specs for clothing.
Dynamic banners per collection Give each collection page its own vibe with a personalised banner or header text.
Custom SEO copy Manage SEO-friendly titles and meta descriptions directly through metafields, without changing the standard product description.
Unique product badges or labels Use metafields to give products unique labels like 'Sustainable', 'Handmade' or 'Limited Edition' without changing the product titles.
Customer-specific content Use metafields to dynamically display certain copy or offers based on customer data, such as loyalty status or purchase history.
And what about Metaobjects?
Metafields are powerful, but Shopify went one step further: Metaobjects. With these you can build complete data sets, such as size guides or a team overview, and display them anywhere in your store. But we'll save that for the next post!
By using Metafields smartly, you make your store more dynamic, more professional and easier to manage. Got questions about how to apply this within the Syncer Framework? Let us know — we're happy to help!
