The context: commerce shifts from search to questions
You used to search for "black sneakers size 43" on Google. Now you ask ChatGPT: "I'm looking for comfortable sneakers for daily use, budget €150, ideally sustainably made." The difference? AI doesn't return search results — it returns recommendations.
Consumers are increasingly asking AI platforms questions instead of searching themselves. They expect AI to understand what they want, compare alternatives and even buy on their behalf. This is called agentic commerce: AI agents performing tasks on behalf of consumers.
That moves commerce out of the traditional store. Products are discovered in chat interfaces, voice assistants and AI-driven apps. The conclusion is clear: if products are to be found by AI, they also have to be understood by AI.
Shopify sees this coming
Shopify has been investing in tomorrow's infrastructure for years. Instead of building separate integrations with each AI platform, Shopify is taking a different approach: building standards that work for everyone.
The goal? Making product data available outside the store so AI agents can find, understand and even sell products. To that end Shopify has introduced two important building blocks:

So not marketing features but fundamental infrastructure for the next phase of e-commerce.
What are Shopify Catalogs, exactly?
Let's first clarify what Catalogs are not:
- ❌ Not collections (you already know those from your Shopify Admin)
- ❌ Not a marketing feature or a new merchant interface
- ❌ Not a tool you have to "turn on" yourself
What Catalogs are:
A technical catalogue layer for structured, real-time product data. Shopify Catalog gives external systems — like AI agents, ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot — access to products from millions of merchants worldwide.
A nice analogy: "The store is for people. Catalogs are for machines."
Shopify uses specialised AI to categorise, enrich and standardise product data. That allows AI agents to find exactly what a consumer is looking for in fractions of a second — out of billions of products worldwide.
And what is UCP, then?
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard Shopify developed together with Google and more than 20 other companies (including Target, Walmart, Etsy, Stripe, Visa and Mastercard).
Think of UCP as a universal language for commerce. It defines agreements about how products, prices, stock and orders are communicated between systems. Thanks to UCP, AI agents can:
- Discover and compare products
- Apply discount codes and loyalty points
- Handle checkout flows
- Place orders on behalf of consumers
Shopify isn't using UCP to replace your platform but to make it understandable to the outside world. The protocol works alongside existing standards such as Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent2Agent (A2A) and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
The result? Merchants will soon be able to sell directly in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app — without extra configuration.
Do you need to do anything as a merchant right now?
Here's the good news:
- ✅ No, you don't have to "turn anything on"
- ✅ No, you don't have to rebuild your store
- ✅ Yes, Shopify takes care of this under the hood
But there's an important nuance: the quality of your product data determines how well Shopify can represent your store in AI channels.
If your product titles are unclear, your variants inconsistent and your product descriptions empty or messy — even the best AI can't present your products well.
What does this mean concretely for findability in AI?
AI platforms work fundamentally differently from traditional search engines. Google ranked websites based on links and keywords. AI chooses for itself what to show based on how well it understands a question and whether it trusts the available data.
Platforms rely on structured data. Messy product information simply means: invisible.
What does work:
