You've decided to move to Shopify Plus. Good move. But the moment you start talking to people about it, the questions pile up fast. How long will it take? Will we lose data? What about SEO? These are exactly the right questions to be asking — and they deserve straight answers.

At Syncer.io, we've guided dozens of merchants through platform migrations of every shape and size. Below are the ten questions we hear most often, answered as clearly as we can.

1. How long does a migration take?

The honest answer: it depends on the complexity of your store. A straightforward migration — moderate catalogue, limited custom integrations, no headless architecture — typically takes between four and eight weeks from kick-off to go-live. Larger merchants with bespoke ERP connections, multi-currency setups, or subscription logic should plan for ten to sixteen weeks. Syncer works in parallel streams so your team isn't blocked at every step. We set a clear timeline at the start and stick to it.

2. Will I lose data?

No. With Syncer's Live Sync® process, your data is migrated via direct API connections — no exports, no spreadsheets, no manual copying. Every record is validated before it goes live: products, variants, inventory levels, customer accounts, order history, gift cards. We run multiple reconciliation checks throughout the process and flag any discrepancies immediately. If something doesn't match, we fix it before cutover, not after.

3. What happens to my SEO?

SEO continuity is one of the most critical parts of any migration, and it's a dedicated workstream in every Syncer project. We inventory every existing URL, map 301 redirects to the new Shopify structure, and validate canonical tags before launch. Your sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console immediately after go-live. Post-launch monitoring is included so we can catch any indexing anomalies early. According to Shopify's own migration guide, SEO loss from incomplete redirect mapping is one of the most common migration risks — which is precisely why we treat it as a first-class deliverable, not an afterthought.

4. Do I need to close my store during migration?

No. That's the whole point of Live Sync®. Your existing store stays fully operational throughout the migration. We build and validate the new Shopify Plus environment in parallel, running synchronised data until the moment of cutover. Cutover itself is managed as a controlled switchover — typically done during low-traffic hours — and takes minutes, not hours. Your customers keep shopping. Your team keeps processing orders. Nothing stops.

5. What happens to my order history and customer accounts?

Both migrate completely. Historical orders — including their line items, shipping details, and fulfilment status — are moved via Shopify's Order API. Customer accounts, including email addresses, purchase history, and tags, are migrated and validated for duplicates. Passwords cannot be migrated due to hashing (this is a platform security constraint, not a Syncer limitation), so customers receive a password-reset prompt on first login. We handle the email communication strategy as part of the migration plan so this doesn't come as a surprise to your customer base.

6. How does Syncer handle custom integrations?

This is where platform migrations typically get complicated — and where an API-first approach makes all the difference. We map your existing integration landscape early in the project: ERP, OMS, PIM, loyalty platforms, 3PL connections, review tools, marketing stacks. For each integration we determine whether a native Shopify app covers the need, whether a connector needs to be configured, or whether a custom API integration is required. Every integration is tested in staging before it goes anywhere near your live environment. Nothing goes live that hasn't been validated end-to-end.

7. What platforms can you migrate from?

We migrate from all major platforms: Magento 1 and 2 (Adobe Commerce), WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Lightspeed eCom, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, SAP Commerce, and custom-built platforms. We've also migrated merchants from MACH architectures and legacy bespoke systems. The source platform determines the complexity of data extraction — some are straightforward, others require reverse-engineering. Either way, Syncer handles it entirely. You never need to touch an export file.

8. What does a migration cost?

Migration investment depends on three variables: the size of your catalogue, the number and complexity of integrations, and whether a new theme or custom storefront is part of the scope. A reliable way to get a concrete estimate is to use our migration calculator, which generates a breakdown based on your specific situation. You'll have a number within minutes, not weeks. Run a free migration scan to see what your migration looks like.

9. What if something goes wrong?

We build rollback protocols into every migration from the start. If an issue surfaces during cutover, we have predefined steps to revert to your original platform within a defined window. In practice, issues that reach cutover are rare — because they've been caught and resolved in staging during the weeks before go-live. Post-launch, Syncer provides a hypercare period during which our team monitors your store closely and responds immediately to any anomalies. You're not handed a go-live and left on your own.

10. How do I get started?

The fastest way to start is with a migration scan. It gives you a clear picture of scope, timeline, and investment — based on your actual store, not a generic estimate. From there, you'll have everything you need to make an informed decision and, if you're ready, a plan to move forward. No commitment required for the scan itself.
